I had the same modprobe error with my sb64, but with the correct
settings a reboot everything seemed to work just fine.  I'm not sure
what the problem with playing the test sound in sndconfig is, but if you
know the proper configuration for your soundcard then it would appear
that sndconfig still sets things up correctly.
