I think I may have something to offer on this one! (yes, it scares me,
too :-)
HOWEVER, my solution is reliant on you having installed a certain
application before this problem... and I'll get to it soon.
I stuffed up in a way very similar to this. I think it was the primary
dos partition (hda1/win95) in Disk Druid and I deleted it.
Well... I thought I had lost the entire system, but, I rebooted using an
old win95 boot disk, which got me as far as sitting at the a:\> prompt.
I tried restoring the MBR using fdisk: "fdisk c: /mbr". Didn't work.
However, I remembered that I had installed an antivirus program not so
long ago, and one thing common to all good antivirus programs is that
they backup the FAT and MBR, etc... I searched high and low, and found
four disks that I had made with Norton Antivirus Deluxe 4.0. On one of
the disks (can't remember which) there was a program (can't remember
what) that restored my FAT & MBR from a backup it had made... and
"whoopdidoo" my system was back in one piece. And I don't think I lost
my linux installation either (but don't quote me on that). I think I
made a boot disk before restoring the FAT and MBR and was still able to
boot good ol' linux again.
Sorry about the obscurity of the details, but it was a few months ago
and I don't have the norton bootup disks with me at the moment.
Hope my little tale helps someone...
Regards,
David Taylor.
