Mike,
Though I don't personally know what causes it, I find that this occurs
after having a particular system up for, oh, say, beyond 2 weeks or so.
It's a relatively busy system, if that helps. The only way I've
personally 'fixed' the problem is waiting for a power outage to take
down the system and bring it back up (i.e., reboot). Seems harmless,
and of course finger is always available as a 'who' substitute.
