Xconfigurator is a newtered version of xf86config that Donnie
first put together for Red Hat 4.0 (October 1996). As far as
limitations, Xconfigurator makes use of some default settings, while
other aspects of xf86config are found in other programs, such as
mouseconfig. This mostly stems from integrating them into the
install procedure.

If you have fairly standard hardware and don't want to implement a lot
of frills then Xconfigurator should work fine.
If you are more interested in tweaking and tinkering then xf86config
may be to your liking.
If you want to have the same enjoyment that folks experienced back in
the early days find a generic XF86Config and start hand-adjusting the
settings. Great fun, ranks right up there with root canals and smashing
your thumb repeatedly with a hammer.

--Kit,
who has spent many hours hacking XF86Config files and highly
recommends Xconfigurator. :-)
