Do you have your ISP's namesevers listed in /etc/resolv.conf:

search whoever.net 
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

And make the permissions on this file 644:

 -rw-r--r--   1 root     root           47 Mar  7 09:52 resolv.conf
