I completely agree.

You need to keep in mind that the "v.everything" designation was just meant
to denote that it supported v.terbo and HST and all sorts of other crap,
plus v.34. It came at a time when there was a lot of flux in the
higher-speed (higher than 14.4k) world, and some proprietary aborted
standards-attempts needed to be supported.

The only reason I have one is that when I ran the ISP, Ingram Micro had them
on sale one day for $170 (for the internal), so I couldn't pass it up.
I've never found the Sportster to be any less reliable in terms of making
good connections and keeping them, although I still recommend Couriers on
the server end because I have found them to be more robust in terms of not
burning out after years of use. YMMV, and every time I say this I hear from
people who agree and people who disagree. Hopefully I'll hear from neither
this time. :-)
As I write this I'm about 12 inches from an old Courier HST that I rely upon
in a mission-semi-critical role as the paging modem on my primary monitoring
server. It's ancient, it's been rode hard and put away wet, and it's never
exhibited a hint of a problem. The company bought it for $35 from the
second person who'd ever used it to run a BBS. At one point long ago, it
was the first modem in Ada that ran a BBS faster than 1200bps. I like it
because every program in the world, no matter how ancient, supports it
directly, and also because it'll probably outlive me.
It's got round LEDs. Remember those? :-)
