I would recommend using the much more advanced Xconfigurator program
that comes with Red Hat 5.0;

--cut--
capella:~$ rpm -qi Xconfigurator
Name : Xconfigurator Distribution: Hurricane
Version : 3.25 Vendor: Red Hat Software
Release : 1 Build Date: Sun Nov 9
20:36:33 1997
Install date: Wed Apr 1 19:59:32 1998 Build Host: porky.redhat.com
Group : X11/Utilities Source RPM:
Xconfigurator-3.25-1.src.rpm
Size : 98738
Packager : Red Hat Software <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Summary : Red Hat X Window System Configuration tool.
Description :
This is the Red Hat X Configuration tool. It is based on the sources
for xf86config, a utility from XFree86. It has a nicer user interface
added to make it easier for the end user.

NOTE - use mouseconfig to change your mouse type, then re-run
Xconfigurator
to set X up for your new mouse type.
--cut--

As it says above, it makes your life easier. Perhaps worth backing up
your /etc/X11/XF86Config file first, all the same.

With modern graphics cards Xconfigurator can often autodetect it, and
suggests a default resolution and colour depth depending on your
hardware. You answer a couple of questions about your monitor's
capabilities, and you're done...

Tweaking the XF86Config file by hand is okay, once you know what it all
means, but to be honest, I only ever bother to do it when I want to
change my font settings.
