Just to share my own experience in getting my S3 Virge with 2 M video RAM to
work on Linux ..

I managed to get it to work with both the MetroX and the XFree 3.3.1 provided
with official RedHat 5. I have eventually opted to use the latter partly
because it's non-commercial and more importantly because the former causes some
display trouble with Netscape 4.

Here are the modeline settings which I'm using with XFree that allow me to
obtain relatively good displays, comparable to those I have with Windows 95. I
actually extracted some of these settings from my MetroX configuration because
the monitor specifications available there are closer to that for mine (Philips
Brilliance 105, 69KHz horiz scanning):

Modeline "1024x768" 94.5 1024 1072 1168 1376 768 769 772 808 +hsync -vsync
Modeline "800x600" 50 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666 +hsync +vsync
Modeline "640x480" 31.5 640 656 720 840 480 481 484 500 -hsync -vsync

The only complaint I have about XFree at the moment is that the X server
wrapper doesn't seem to work properly ...

Hope this had set things in perspective ..

later,
hoeteck
