I have no ideea about solaris tools but in RH5 there is (at least) exmh - an X 
front-end to mh.
It works fine for me.
There is also the Netscape Messenger (with Netscape Communicator).

it certainly should.
you can check for the files /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb and /etc/rc.d/rc?.d/[SK]??smb
they should all be gone...

on the other hand, if you only want it disabled you can reset the executable flag on 
/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb

try ical ("a popular X-based calendar/scheduler...."), it comes with RH
