FWIW, I've looked WLDD over (good friend/associate just bought it) and it does
look very good.  Brand new (first edition March of '98) and apparently quite
complete, it contains a lot of info that would be worth knowing -- whether you're
interested in writing device drivers, or just getting a better handle on how
Linux works in general.  I also think that this book is well-timed, since
hardware support seems to be one of those areas where we can always use more warm
bodies plunking away.

I also advocate sending the baby's trust fund to O'Reilly & Assocs. on general
principles; they have a remarkable knack for producing no-BS, relevant work, and
they've been supporting Linux for quite a while now.

So yeah, that's the book I'd buy first.

Good luck and thank you, thank you, thank you, on behalf of all the geeks out
here who _don't_ have your C background and won't be as useful as you will any
time soon.  I wish I had the basic knowledge for a book like that to be useful.
