The mouse isn't necessarily any more fiddly under Linux/X than in some
other environment.  You can adjust mouse parameters under X just like
anywhere else; the GUI tools for doing it just aren't widely distributed
yet (and they aren't essential).

Look at the man page for xset before you give up (see the m option), and
maybe try decreasing the acceleration and/or increasing the threshold.
And if you're using a PS/2 mouse, say so.  Historically some PS/2 mice are
very jumpy, occasionally, under XFree86, with no apparent remedy in some
cases.
