I've been using dump and T3000 successfully for over a year.
dump 0ucBf 1500000 /dev/ftape /dev/hda3
The density, length and suchlike are not used directly but are multiplied
together to get an estimate of how much data can go on one tape.
So appropriately-chosen lies work perfectly well here.
I'm happy with dump although I know Dave W prefers bru.
