Hello Cristina,
I have been volunteering with AOO (Apache OpenOffice) for only about two
months now and personally I can tell you it's a great project. I'm sure I'm
not the first and won't be the last to tell you how extremely helpful and
friendly everyone here is, especially the ones who have been here for a
very long time or the ones who are masters of their own craft. Have you
used the program for long? What do you mostly use it for? What is the one
thing you like the most about it? What is the one thing that you think
could be improved? How would you go about improving it? I'm sure you have
heard before that the best way to learn is to actually jump in and do it.
So these are a few questions the answers to which can help to jump start
your experience with AOO. For example, if you would like to learn how to
code, perhaps you can identify an area/aspect/functionality/feature of AOO
that you would like to volunteer on, then figure out the programming
language/tool you would want/need to use to make it work. There are many
sources on the internet where you can learn that programming language of
choice. Then perhaps apply it to AOO. It will take time to learn so be
patient and be amazed at what you can do while helping the AOO community on
your own terms.

As for myself, I'm still trying to build the damn thing (program) on my
macos :) It's a painfully fun process because it involves complex
integration of technologies. Of course these are my personal opinions and
others who are more knowledgeable of the project can provide you with way
better guidance on how to volunteer.
