Once the article starts explaining about the \\?\ prefix, that seemed like a terrible hack to me.... :-/

Sorry for the confusion, I meant the actual Python source of rdiff- backup. It will need to use Unicode for its operations in order to support long filenames on Windows (since the Windows non-Unicode API is limited to < 260 characters, as the MSDN article explains).

Moving the Python source to use rdiff-backup goes hand-in-hand with supporting Python 3, so this effort will take some time.
