If you're checking out the repository using a Windows version of git, there's a
setting somewhere for it to create symlinks. By default it was off last time I
checked, which was a couple of years ago. And it was off because in Windows
apps don't have the permission to create symlinks by default. So you may need
to enable symlinks both in git and in Windows.
