Since the error is encountered by code in 'usethis' (or somewhere
downstream), likely not in base R, you may also get a more direct
answer by following links at <https://usethis.r-lib.org/SUPPORT.html>.

A common cause of such problems is path normalization.  Base R tries not to introduce UNC paths, e.g. path normalization of a path including a drive letter tries not to turn that path into UNC, exactly for this reason: there are tools around, not just R, that do not fully support UNC paths.
