Can't you tell by looking at what is printed?  You should see

* installing the package to build vignettes
* creating vignettes ... OK

(You can save this output to a file by adding the option --log to the R CMD build call).

    Is vignette.pdf in inst/doc before calling R CMD build?  Is it rebuilt
    by R CMD build?
