I would find function which change the size automatically.
For example:
> A=matrix(c(1,4,7,10,2,5,8,11,3,6,9,12),c(3,4))
> A
[,1] [,2] [,3] [,4]
[1,] 1 10 8 6
[2,] 4 2 11 9
[3,] 7 5 3 12
B=func(A,2,6)
B becomes:
1 3 5 7 9 11
2 4 6 8 10 12
