Hi Steve, I don't have that issue with emacs 23.1, ess 5.6.1, and R 2.10 on OpenSuse 11.1. eldoc doesn't work until the current evaluation is complete, but I'm able to edit my scripts files. So there is a way to avoid the problem you describe (seems to work be default with my setup).
