Thanks Bert, I've used reshape a bit but hadn't considered it for this need. plyr is new to me so I'll check it out.
I think the hard part in my case is designing the bins. I have some continuous signals for which I don't know how many bins I want to break each into. I'd like to be able to sort of on the fly chose 4, 5, 6 or 7 different values and get bins between each consecutive value, and also above and below. I'll look at the plyr docs to see if it can do that.
