Please see http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu to see how you can install pre-built binaries of R 2.9.1 for Ubuntu -- you do not have to build from source. Also consider the r-sig-debian list for Debian / Ubuntu questions; subscriptions are required in order to post.
