don't forget that r seems to take, maybe undeserved, the pride of being
a functional programming language.  it has apparently been designed by
people who don't think implementing cs guys' ideas is necessarily a bad
idea.  you do have lapply & co in r, not without a purpose.  certainly
not to just please computer scientists.
