I suggest that you read the literature cited in the help file, most
particularly
Pinheiro, J.C., and Bates, D.M. (2000) "Mixed-Effects Models in S
and S-PLUS", Springer.
MASS (Modern Applied Statistics in S) also has some useful things in
it.
