I'd rather just grab current prebuild binaries from any CRAN mirror, eg http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/ as Vincent and Michael do a really excellent job rebuilding my Debian packages for Ubuntu x86 and amd64, typically within a day. There are a few other goodies there too, see the README in the aforementioned directory.
