I think you mean you are unlikely to profit from it if you base your business model on "selling" the "product" and the product is the code; because it is GPL you have to make the source available and so anyone could take your source and implement a rival product and probably undercut you as they don't have to employ any developers... There is absolutely nothing against profiting from Open Source. Novel is doing rather nicely these days (albeit somewhat to do with the Microsoft pact), as is RedHat and a whole plethora of other open source ventures. But these guys tend to sell support and services for the code they give away free (as in beer and speech) and don't make money of the code itself.
