paste and expression are used several times in the code that was posted.
The one that causes all the trouble is
labels=paste(PNotSusp,"=\n",mylab)
where mylab is an expression, the result of
expression(paste(" ",character(x)^6))
The paste() within the expression() call is harmless; the one outside it
is disastrous.
