Not sure what the issue is with the provided code but note:

lubridate::dmy_hm("Thu, 25 Aug 2016 6:34 PM")
[1] "2016-08-25 18:34:00 UTC"
Though if you go that route: set the TZ because on the timestamp it is
ambiguous.
