Go to the HTML help for R and read "An Introduction to R", section 10, "Writing your own functions" (the clue's in the title). Don't miss out section 10.7, "Scope"; it's important, but follows 'advanced examples' which are less important for a beginner. After that, Google. And after that, R-help again.
