If you don't mind using an external (but very popular) graphics package known as ggplot2 it's super easy:

It's also well implemented in gplots::heatmap.2 (that is, the heatmap.2 function from the gplots package which, name notwithstanding, is unrelated to ggplot2). Run if(!require(gplots)) {install.packages("gplot"); library(gplot)} example(heatmap.2) for some examples.
