FWIW, I've found another person with the same problem:

He says that when R is run as root, it works. But he's on Linux, and I'm
not sure that's really likely to be the problem on OS X. You might still
want to try this, anyway.

Let's CC Kurt Hornik, he'll be much more clueful than I am... ;-)
