Thanks Brian. I installed libf2c for the x86_64 server, and then R and Bioconductor both installed without error, so apparently it was missing the library files. Back in business.

Loooking at the R spec file, this is likely to be in gcc-g77 (or a dependency of that), and that is a dependency of the R-devel RPM. Have you tried installing the latter: you will need it to install packages later? Googling got me to http://www.redhat.com/archives/nahant-list/2007-April/msg00049.html which suggests that you need the libf2c RPM on RHEL4. -- Brian D.
