It is the latter, as the message says, the vector memory is exhausted. Even after a gc is executed, there is not enough free memory on the vector heap to allocate the vector. See ?Memory and ?mem.maxVSize for more. Use mem.maxVSize() to see if there is any limit set - the default is platform dependent.

In principle, yes, removing objects could fix this.
