Affecting cairo 1.11.2+ and most versions of freetype. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=891457 The initial problem was seen with R Sweave, but eventually traced back to cairo then onto freetype (comment 10, 13 and comment 33).
Leading up to the whole thing was a new vignette I was writing - more or less about using as much non-English in R code as possible. One interesting use would be for hiding source code in plain sight...
