It appears, the cause of the problem was failure to "make clean" every once in a while, and this resulted in installing both displaylist.Rnw and displaylist.Snw (into a single library location).
I've put a workaround for this into the help.search code, and a new check in the package install code to quit if you have a situation like this. For people working in R-devel this might cause builds to fail until you fix and re-install the bad packages.
