At the very least something like
R -d gdb
and the output of bt would be helpful. Then in general things like the exact compilers used are needed, especially on "testing" Linux (note that you probably don't want to use anything more recent then gcc 4.3 due to bugs). Also it's a good idea to run make check before make install ...

The script you supplied (and the resulting R) works just fine for me on lenny (modulo the --prefix).
