on fedora core 5, you'll need to install the mysql-devel package.
the "mysql.h" header is in /usr/include/mysql/ .
So you need:
export PKG_CPPFLAGS="-I/usr/include/mysql"
export PKG_LIBS="-L/usr/lib64/mysql -lmysqlclient"
