look like:

You probably meant to write:
(default: \$QEMU_PERSISTENT=no)
to produce output of:
(default: $QEMU_PERSISTENT=no)
or:
(default: \${QEMU_PERSISTENT:-no})
to produce output of:
(default: ${QEMU_PERSISTENT:-no})
both to clarify that it defaults from the environment, and that its
default is no rather than yes.
