It seems there is some confusion about how to handle this... Anyway I looked at the patch again and after the recent changes towards version 3.4 the patch cannot be applied anymore. Taking into account that there was no interest in this area for the last years, I will not take the time to rework the patch. Anyway please consider to commit the new documentation patch I have uploaded to the issue.

It is really necessary to clarify the suppoprted sample formats in the documentation.
