This is the same experience I have. I rely on setuptools and eggs extensively in developing our software, and I use setuptools and eggs as the primary method of giving our source code to other programmers. But no software is ever installed on our production servers unless that software is in .deb form in an apt-gettable repository, and this requirement is unlikely to change for the forseeable future.
