I'm surprised that the byte is zero, rather than being the signal number. This would reflect the way C-level signal handlers work, where they are I believe called with the signal number. Is any discussion of this point conveniently available online? I ask for my own understanding, and definitely not out of a desire to re-open any settled issues!
