In this code, the same regex is compiled with and without re.VERBOSE. Without,
it compiles fine. With, it fails with an "unterminated subpattern" error.

list_num_rx2 = r"""(?x)(?P<paren>\()?(\d+|#|[a-z])(?(paren)\)|\.)"""
