I always expect "|".

'|a|b|c|'
>>> "abc".replace("", "|", -1)
'|a|b|c|'
>>> "abc".replace("", "|", 0)
'abc'
>>> "abc".replace("", "|", 1)
'|abc'
>>> "abc".replace("", "|", 100)
'|a|b|c|'
