Excellent! That was the thing I was looking for - in the future I will go straight for gir* packages if I miss something.
Note: Unfortunately (and as noted in the email discussion on PyGI adoption/future) there are loads of old-style FAQ and examples floating around the interwebs that easily confuse people... BTW: does somebody know how to extract information from the typelib G-IR files that get installed /usr/lib/girepository-1.0/? I'm using Eclipse & PyDev and it would be nice if Eclipse could "see" that stuff that is available from the gi.repository modules. Thanks!
