I think you will have to ensure that there is always an editable character
there, by replacing it as needed.  I'd probably try the "delete-range"
signal, and have marks around each editable part, and check that they
haven't been told to abut (delete-range is before the change), and, umm,
insert a space or whatever beside the range about to be deleted, so that
after the delete, there is still an editable character there.  Might
require some fiddling to get it to work.
