Let me say I'm not an expert of how pygtk internally works but I think
the problem is GTK+ never call our methods. Please, some pygtk masters
(gjc, jdahlin, ...) confirm this

Don't even put those two words together (TreeView + hacking). It makes
me have nightmares during daylight

I would say let's make the GTK+ guys apply my patch to have a
comborender in GTK+ and then we just need to wrap it :) This way
everybody is happy. If all we want is a ComboRenderer this can work, but
I just put that example. We have a much more general problem in hands.
