I think it was ok, compiled against gtk 2.3.5, but was broken before
that.

GLib-GObject-WARNING **: cannot register existing type `GtkRcStyle'

Does API/ABI compatible mean that pygtk should work if compiled against
gtk 2.3.6 (eventually 2.4)? 

If so, is this a compatibility problem for gtk that should be reported?
