The only way to do this in a GtkEntry is to prefill it with monospaced characters (such as underscore and dot) and then write a complex set of key_press_event and insert/delete_text handlers that take care of replacing them on-the-fly. There was an example sent to me a long time ago by Ricardo Lenzi, but it still needs to be updated to PyGTK2; I can send you that if you're interested, but be warned it's not simple.
