And what call causes the freeze in the Canvas, then?

I don't have a PyGTK-2 or Gnome environment available (I know) so I
can't help you there. I *would* advise you to try with at least 2.0,
since your version is quite outdated and had a number of outstanding
bugs. If somebody more current than I can try, I'd also appreciate it.
