Lots of Unicode fixes and some object system cleanups.

To be clear, I am *not* advocating that pygtk drop support for Python 2.2
right now.  I'm simply concerned that it will get mired in an obsolete
version of Python if it adopts support for 2.2 as an explicit goal.
