Correction: yes, you *can* check the presence of arbitrary files with 
find_file, one absolute path at a time.  You can also use this to choose 
the first available file from a priority-ordered list.  That might be 
useful to you, but it's still a bad idea to choose which target files to 
manage based on which sources are available on the master.
